I am Dr. Jagadish Torlapati, a Research Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rowan University. Since joining the department in 2014, I have dedicated myself to advancing research and education in environmental engineering. I lead the Environmental Engineering Division at the Center for Research and Education in Advanced Transportation Engineering Systems (CREATES) and collaborate with the Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC), a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. My work at ADAC focuses on improving resilience in Arctic regions through oil spill research and predictive modeling.
My research journey has been both varied and impactful. I have developed models to address oil spill remediation, including simulations for the Deepwater Horizon spill and shoreline bioremediation techniques. In addition, I explore critical environmental issues such as the thawing of permafrost and air quality challenges in industrialized communities. This work is generously supported by leading agencies such as the Department of Defense, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, and New Jersey American Water.
In the classroom, I am passionate about fostering a strong foundation for future engineers. I teach a variety of courses, including Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Fluid Mechanics, and Civil Engineering Systems, and mentor both graduate and undergraduate researchers. As the Faculty Advisor for Rowan’s Engineers Without Borders chapter, I guide students as they undertake transformative projects globally, including water resource development initiatives in Ecuador and sustainable solutions for local communities in New Jersey.
Beyond academia, I have led international EWB projects in India, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. In addition, we also partnered with non-profits such as VietLead, StandUp with Salem, CROPS NJ, and Noyes Arts Garage to promote community resilience and sustainability.
If you are a prospective student, collaborator, or industry partner, I would be delighted to connect. Feel free to reach out to me at [lastname]@rowan.edu.
